Cross Stitch Calculator
This cross stitch calculator tells you exactly how big your finished design will be before you stitch a single cross. Enter the stitch counts from your pattern and your fabric count, and get the finished size in inches or centimeters — instantly.
Use the counted cross stitch calculator above for any pattern, then the tools gathered here — fabric size, materials, Aida, linen, floss, hoop, time, and price — to plan the rest of your project. Each one runs entirely in your browser.

How it's calculated
The calculator divides each stitch count by the fabric count to get the design size in inches. If you tick stitching over two threads, the fabric count is halved first, because each stitch covers two threads instead of one. Choosing centimeters converts the result by multiplying inches by 2.54. The size math is exact arithmetic; the estimates elsewhere on this site, like floss per skein, are always labeled as estimates.
Limits: size results are exact arithmetic; floss, time, and price are estimates from adjustable assumptions.

How to use the calculator
Find the stitch counts on your pattern — usually printed as something like 140W x 100H. Type those two numbers in, choose your fabric count, and read off the finished size. If you stitch on evenweave or linen over two threads, tick the over-two box.
You can switch between inches and centimeters at any time; the result converts automatically. Use the reset button to start over, or copy the result to paste into your project notes.
The counted cross stitch calculator formula
Finished size in inches = stitch count / fabric count.
For example, 140 stitches wide on 14-count fabric: 140 / 14 = 10 inches wide. When stitching over two threads on evenweave or linen, the effective count is halved: 140 stitches on 28-count linen over two = 140 / 14 = 10 inches — the same finished size as 14-count Aida.
To convert to centimeters, multiply inches by 2.54.
New to cross stitch?
Counted cross stitch means every stitch is placed by counting threads on the fabric — there is nothing printed to follow. Start on 14-count Aida: the grid is easy to see and the holes are easy to hit. Use two strands of floss, a size 24 tapestry needle, and stitch one full cross at a time to keep the tops all slanting the same way.
Your first project should be small — under 3,000 stitches. Run its counts through the calculator above so you buy the right amount of fabric the first time.
Worked example
A pattern measures 168 stitches wide by 120 high, stitched on 16-count Aida.
Width: 168 ÷ 16 = 10.5 inches. Height: 120 ÷ 16 = 7.5 inches. In centimeters: 10.5 × 2.54 = 26.67 cm wide, 7.5 × 2.54 = 19.05 cm high.
Add a 3-inch margin per side for framing: cut 16.5 × 13.5 inches. The fabric size calculator does this step automatically.

Frequently asked questions
What is fabric count?
Fabric count is the number of stitches per inch of fabric. On 14-count Aida you fit 14 stitches into one inch, so a 140-stitch-wide design finishes at 10 inches wide. Higher counts give smaller, more detailed designs.
Does the counted cross stitch calculator work for linen stitched over two?
Yes. Tick the over-two option and choose your linen count — the calculator halves the effective count automatically. A 140-stitch design on 28-count linen over two finishes at 10 inches wide, the same as 14-count Aida.
How much extra fabric should I cut?
Add a margin of at least 3 inches on every side for framing or hooping. The fabric size calculator takes your finished design size and adds the margin for you, so you know exactly what size piece to cut.
How many skeins of floss do I need?
It is a commonly cited rule of thumb that one skein covers roughly 2,000 stitches on 14-count fabric with 2 strands, but coverage varies with stitch type and tension. Use the floss calculator and adjust the stitches-per-skein figure to match your own stitching.
How long will my project take?
Divide your total stitch count by your stitches per hour. Speed varies a lot with the pattern, fabric count and experience, so treat any figure as a rough assumption: many stitchers start around 60–100 stitches per hour and adjust after timing a real session. The time estimator lets you enter your own rate and works out how many days it will take at your daily stitching time.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. Every calculation runs locally in your browser. Your stitch counts and settings never leave your device, are never uploaded, and are never stored.
